What is good sales? What are the latest sales tools? Our sales coach Saul Janssen explains!
Sales seems like a tough business where only the biggest talkers have the winning hand. Yet it’s not.
“The trick is in listening carefully to the customer and offering a solution to their problem,” explains Saul Janssen, sales coach at Brilliant Work. “Marketing and sales are also coming closer and closer together. As a result, marketing seems to have taken over the domain of the sales person, so to speak. Sales is a process that a customer goes through and you want to respond in the right way at the right time. This helps make sales more predictable and successful.”
There are actually two types of sales, Saul explains: inbound and outbound sales. Inbound can be a marketing campaign, good copy based on keyword research or a booth at a trade show.
What does it give the customer?
“When introducing new products and services, sales has a great role to play: it requires that you understand what someone is dealing with, what challenges they are facing, and what they are missing if they just stick with their current solutions,” Saul explains. “One thing is certain: people will get the job done with or without your solution now anyway. But what matters is that you can make it clear to them that with your service or product things can be done better or faster or that the qualities will go up.”
A caller is better?
“Looking at the latest technologies, calling potential customers seems outdated. But Saul thinks otherwise: “Calling is heartily old-fashioned, but it does work! You do have to make it clear in the first 20 seconds why it’s interesting for the person you’re calling to keep talking to you. And if the word ‘I’ appears in those first few sentences of yours, you may go back to the drawing board. Because it’s all about the other person.”

Yes Energy Advice – Business coaching, leadership training and employee policy development
In 2007, Jasper Meinema started his own business based on an error in his employer’s energy bill. He was doing the administration there and came across a big mistake in the energy bills: too much was being paid! As he discovered errors in more energy bills, he thought “I’m going to make this my business” and so YES Energy Advice was born. The company has now grown into a full-fledged enterprise with 21 staff. YES supports and helps SMEs and real estate companies with energy tax reclaiming, purchasing energy contracts and realizing solar panels, among other things.
Lara Kranendijk has been working at YES for two years: she started as an Energy Tax Officer and was later promoted to team leader. Prioritizing, professionalizing and managing were new things for her when she became team leader. Because Jasper had already been coached by Brilliant Work for some time, the step of arranging a business coach for her was easily made.
‘In the process with my Brilliant Work coach, I learned to prioritize’
“Lizanne Jakobs of Brilliant Work especially taught me how to prioritize. At first, everything seemed important, but she explained to me how to choose: ‘what is urgent and what is not’? She literally said, “The team must be able to function first, so if one of your team members has a question for you, that’s the most important thing. Your team can get on with their work after answering that question’. I still apply this advice every day.”
You can read the complete interview with Lara about her experiences during the coaching process with Lizanne Jakobs and Martine Pauw here.
