Are you also so busy? It seems like a permanent status, we are all very busy, reading emails and apps, having meetings, everything. Our days are filled by things we respond to such as mail, phone calls, meeting requests or forms that need to be filled out.
Because of all this busyness, deadlines are met less and less often and our “to do” lists of what we actually wanted to do never get checked off.
So the key is not to be busy, but to be smart. Just thinking about what we are doing instead of just doing it. So ask yourself these questions:
- Does what I am doing have the highest priority?
- Can someone else or another department do it?
- Should it be done at all?
- Can it be done in a more convenient way?
- Does it have to be now?
Two examples:
Discussions, decisions and actions that seem to recur every meeting and where there seems to be no progress. Resolve this by making clear agreements about what will be done, who will pick it up and when it must be finished. Document this and also dare to hold each other accountable for their responsibilities.
Many companies spend large amounts of time (and money) on marketing to acquire new customers instead of retaining existing ones. The latter is much more effective.
