What are the growing pains of a scale-up?
At Brilliant Work, we guide many companies from start-up to scale-up. For example, read the story of Patsboem! educational here.
What began as an initiative of three enthusiastic companions has grown into a leading agency that provides a variety of educational materials for primary and secondary schools. Juul Lelieveld, one of the founders, explains, “In the beginning, the three of us did everything. Over the years, that grew and we added staff.”
Growing pains: the moment of realization
With growth comes change, including at Patsboem! educational. Structure and strategy became increasingly crucial. “We ran into the fact that we were starting to grow. We were getting more staff, but were they doing what they were really good at? Were they in the right place? Conversations about this were occasional. We had no idea how to handle this better.” This was the moment when Patsboem! realized it was time for external expertise to smooth the transition from a small start-up to a structured scale-up.
This search brought Patsboem! educational to Brilliant Work. “You are very much lived by the delusion of the day and deadlines when you work for clients. We found that we were kind of doing the work on the business and everything to do with managing the staff. That was not good,” says Juul. It was time for a partner who understood their unique needs and translated them into concrete action plans and strategies.

Along with the hype of ChatGPT, TikTok or Instagram: the importance of a (good) marketing plan
Here yet “Sometimes I end up with entrepreneurs who think they should do more with ChatGPT or Tiktok,” says Elham Elham Mohseni, marketing coach and consultant at Brilliant Work. “
“I notice that entrepreneurs regularly tend to go along with the latest trends, Elham reveals. “Like Instagram, TikTok or ChatGPT, without having a clearly formulated marketing plan for it. However, this random approach does not produce noticeable results, especially when there is no clear overview of which marketing channel is actually relevant to their specific target audience.”
SWOT analysis unused on the Drive
“When I then inquire about their marketing plan, it often turns out not to exist. Or I am literally told: yes, an intern once prepared a SWOT analysis; it should be on the Drive somewhere. That’s a missed opportunity. With a good marketing plan, you can not only focus better and grow faster, but also evaluate and integrate new tools or platforms more easily.”
Marketing is more than just social media or advertising
“Specifying your customer and your product and/or service is an important part of your marketing. Many business owners often think of marketing only as posting on social media or advertising on Google,” Elham says. “But in reality, marketing is much more comprehensive than that. It also includes identifying your target audience, establishing your unique value-add and working out strategies to attract customers.”
