Riding a bicycle with octagonal wheels is not a very pleasant experience. Yet organizations often work this way in practice. If you had to give scores for the company or agency you work for, would they score the same on, for example:
- Strategy and direction
- Sales and marketing
- Teamwork
- Finance
- Systems and processes
- Employee/customer satisfaction
Put these scores into a spinning wheel, and you get the picture below. A very angular wheel! So it is important as a board or management to look at where the lowest scores are in order to regain a balance.
The tendency in many organizations is to want more output, such as higher sales or productivity. And boost those from a 7 to a 9. But it may very well be that the bottleneck is not there, but with finance, systems or teamwork that may only score a 5.
Step two is to create a vision of what the organization should look like in the future and see if you can get there with your current scores on the wheel. Step three is to create an action plan on how to change all of this. For some organizations maybe a short list, for others very long. When will you start working on this?
